Last year was a tumultuous one for the fashion industry: the death of Michael Jackson, the Bologna leather court case, Kony and the shocking footage of child soldiers in Uganda. And while most of the media attention has been on these dramatic events, there has also been a massive media explosion surrounding the recent spate of brutal attacks on women in the United States.
Many headlines have been shouting about the "battered-woman syndrome" and "battered women," although there is little research on the prevalence of domestic violence. The term itself — battering is a generic term for domestic violence — is somewhat problematic, as is the concept of "battered women." There is no standard definition of battered woman and many definitions are nebulous and focus on some forms of violence (e.g., psychological, physical, financial) more than others (e.g., emotional, sexual). Women who are victims of violent and controlling men often experience repeated, frequent, and escalating violence. And most women do not see themselves as battered:
